Excerpt from November 2nd Issue of InFocus Magazine Interview with
DAD Writers, Neil Purvis and Robert Wade ...

Let’s talk about some of the ways this new film deviates from previous Bonds. A
fairly edgy actor, Michael Madsen, has a part in this film.

RW: He’s an NSA agent, and the American agents in the Bond films have, on the whole,
been very wholesome.
NP: And we wanted a real friction between Bond and this NSA chief.
RW: And we wanted to have a little friction between England and America.

I never thought there’d be a movie with Dame Judi Dench and Michael Madsen.
Do they have a scene together?

RW: [laughs] They do, actually.
NP: It was this massive conflict between these two styles of acting. Judi Dench has got these laser eyes, and looks right at you and fixes you – and Michael Madsen is the complete opposite. I mean, you didn’t really know what he was going to do from take to take.

There are just too many reviews to include ... this very first one that I came across pretty much sums up Dame Judi's role in the film ...

Early Review based on Press-Screening November 8th
... Dame Judi Dench maintains her terrific portrayal of M, although it is sadly under-used in the film. The film's dialogue is at it's best between Bond and M ...

Diane P. from England came across this interesting Snippet:

...  a review  in one English newspaper this morning concerning Dame Judi.  There were the usual complimentary noises made towards Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry.  However, when the reviewer turned to Dame Judi, he mentioned that she was again excellent as M which was not surprising because she's an actress so reliable it's a surprise that Sven Goran Ericsson (the England soccer manager) hasn't got her playing wide on the left for England!  The England soccer team needs all the best players it can get and if Dame Judi possesses the aforementioned left foot, she should make herself available for selection!

Anita S. sent a link to the San Francisco Gate Review which has this to say ...

And then there's Judi Dench, who brings the
gravity of a disappointed mother to her scenes with Brosnan. ...

Here are a few more excerpts from other Reviews ...

The grand dame among many class act ladies in this movie, her calm and cool demeanor says it all...she must compromise at all times, and she hates every minute of it. She baits Bond to prove to the doubters (Mr. Falco) that Bond is still the man he always was. She proves she is a capable leader, and she is rewarded with one hell of a man.

... Of course elegant boss M (Judi Dench) is on hand to glower and
make people look stupid ...

I wholeheartedly agree it's nice to have Judi Dench and John Cleese back as "M"
and "Q." Dench still can't hide her schoolgirl crush on her favorite renegade ...

... Brosnan and Judi Dench's M look at each other in their scenes together
as if to say "Has a lifetime of acting experience come to this?". ...

... Both Judi Dench and John Cleese again deliver solid turns as M & Q, though Dench
feels somewhat underused this time out even though she's colder and meaner ...

M and Robinson in action in what looks MI6 HQ, but it could be another location as an operations room like this has been seen in some of the footage that has been previously released. In the background it looks like Falco sitting on the chair along with possible Korean staff which could imply this is out in the field.

Judi Dench -- Techno Babe ...

M's right-hand-man, Salmon is, as ever, thrilled to be working alongside Dame Judi Dench, though the cast have been doing their best to make Dench's experience an educational one. "Judi's a dream, she's amazing," Salmon told Empire Online. "We got her into iPods and MP3s on this job so M is now a techno-babe."
