Why is it important to take care of your mental health?

take care of your mental health importance

The world is a crazy place, but why? Maybe it’s because people are stressed over schoolwork, jobs, relationships, and money. Mental illness affects about one in four adults every year according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). You can’t always detect if someone has mental illness just by looking at them. Someone with depression may look sad, but they could just be having a bad day. Everyone is affected by mental illness, either themselves or someone in their family.

Importance to take care of your mental health

1. Wellbeing

Studies show that mental illness can affect all aspects of life. Forgetfulness, loss of energy, and lack of motivation are just some examples. There are many problems you could face without taking care of your mental health such as losing friends or getting less done at work or school. If nobody ever took the time to take care of their mental health, the economy would suffer because of all the problems they would face and how much time they would lose to those problems.

2. Being and feeling better

You deserve to feel good and happy about yourself. It’s important to take care of your mental health to make sure you can be an active member of society and do things that make you feel good about yourself. Whether it’s listening to music, exercising, or simply taking a nap, everyone needs time for themselves to unwind and relax.

3. Improving relationships

Most of the time people with mental illness can’t help how they feel so their loved ones shouldn’t take it personally. A lot of times people with mental illness don’t want to burden others with their problems, so they could become isolated and unhappy. Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that people with strong relationships tend to be healthier? That means that if you can’t take care of your own well-being due to mental illness, you won’t be able to help the ones you love to do the same.

4. Living a long and healthy life

Take a look around you, what do you see? Healthy people enjoying their lives, going to work or school every day, playing with friends and family, not missing out on anything because they don’t feel good enough or have too much trouble dealing with things that most people don’t think twice about. What would you give to be able to do what they do? Living with mental illness can take away so much, but there are ways to get back some of that time and live a healthy, happy life.

So remember, your mental health is just as important as your physical health! If you want to stay active in your community and take care of the ones you love, keep your mental health in check. You can do it!

Mental illness can be treated, but you have to get help first to know what’s wrong and how to treat it. 1 in 5 adults experience mental health problems every year so obviously, everyone knows someone who has experienced some kind of challenge because of their condition.
